Dances for the Dionysian Mysteries: Suite for Solo Violin
Project type
Music score
Date
2024
Location
Boston
I thought it would be fitting for my first piece in a modern compositional idiom to be a work for solo violin, as this is often the first instrumentation you learn to write for in introductory college composition classes. I've also been particularly inspired by ballet lately, so I decided to write this piece as a dance suite. My title is an homage to the rituals employed by the cult of Dionysus in ancient Greece/Rome to transcend social constraints, which also seemed fitting, given this is the first piece I've written in which I buck the constraints of the Common Practice Period in music. Dance was also a commonly employed tactic in the original rites, and they tended to enact a transition from a chthonic world to a transcendental one, which has similarly been the subject of much of my poetry lately.
